Sun Day Red by Tiger Woods
For as long as we can remember, Tiger Woods and Nike have been winning recipe in the golf space and there was nothing more exciting on Sundays when Tiger Woods would wear either a red polo or red pullover. It was a symbol of dominance, excellence, and pure competitiveness. However, times have changed and the once unbreakable partnership between Woods and Nike has since fizzled out. Enter into the picture, Sun Day Red by Tiger Woods.
Upon hearing about the news of the break-up between Tiger and Nike, it may have been a surprise to some, but for others the move makes complete sense. It is not unreasonable to compare Tiger Woods in the golf space to Michael Jordan in the basketball space, and we all know Jordan’s famous story about his ownership of the Air Jordan brand. The fact that Tiger Woods never had his own line of Nike golf clubs, shoes, and apparel is simply mind boggling. The rebuttal to that is that Tiger had the “TW” logo on a lot of Nike merchandise, but it just was not the same and hence is likely one of the reasons for the move.
Lets face it, Tiger is coming up on 50 years of age and although he does not have anything to complain about compensation wise following 82 PGA Tour wins, he likely is wanting to make some money on his own brand. It may be a “realist” take and certainly an unpopular one, but with the recent results and injuries sustained since his incredible 2019 Masters win, Tiger seems to be at the tail end of his career. I go back to the Michael Jordan comparison simply because of the amount of compensation Jordan still makes through the Air Jordan brand. Tiger’s move away from Nike seems to be one of future interest.
The Sun Day Red brand’s mission is to be “a brand that promises to bring new and elevated standard to performance wear and luxury lifestyle fashion. The brand sells itself and as long a Tiger Woods has his name, image, and likeness on a piece of footwear, apparel, or headwear, the product is guaranteed to succeed. Tiger’s following, although the performance on the golf course is not nearly what it was, is still as strong as ever and that in itself will produce results.
One thing that is absolutely clear from the initial news releases is that Sun Day Red is not just any brand, but one of performance that gives players extra means of confidence on the golf course or in everyday life. As stated before, the brand represents not just the signature red polos or pullovers, but gloves, hats, shoes, and more. From a brand positioning standpoint, Sun Day Red targets those who want to embrace what Tiger has done for the game of golf through his own image of clothing.
One interesting aspect of the brand is that it flows under the umbrella of the TaylorMade Golf Company. Pretty much since Nike stopped making golf clubs, Tiger Woods has been a TaylorMade athlete and has sported their drivers, irons, and wedges almost religiously. This again is very similar to the Air Jordan brand in a way, that although Sun Day Red is a part of the TaylorMade company, the incentives are treated as if Sun Day Red are a subsidiary of the hierarchy.
First Looks
The first looks at Sun Day Red that the public received was during the Genisis Invitational (Tiger’s hosted tournament), where he unfortunately withdrew due to an illness. However, there is no doubt that the brand popped and immediately cultivated the eyes of the guests and viewers from television viewing. The look that grabbed the most attention was the recreation of the classic polo that Tiger had been seen wearing when he was just a junior, which is a red, black, and white striped polo with the new Sun Day Red logo printed.
Want to see more? Unfortunately, the brand does not fully go public until May 1st so there is still a bit of a waiting game ahead for those who are wanting to sport Sun Day Red on the weekends. It will be very interesting to watch the brand grow and see what kind of immediate impact the shirts and hats have specifically on the “weekend warrior’s” golf attire. It should be pretty easy to see if less players sport brands like Nike, Adidas, Peter Millar, G-Fore and more in result of the brand’s public launch in May.
Our Opinion?
It’s really simple and expressed in two words: Home Run. From just the initial media buzz around when the first leaks of Tiger launching his own golf brand, it is not hard to tell that there will be a vast demand for Sun Day Red apparel. Let’s be honest, every golfer whether new or experience, has dreamed of having the swagger and experience of feeling like Tiger Woods in the patented Sunday red. When the brand officially launches there are going to be players all over the world placing orders to grab their first look at the amazing brand image that Tiger is putting out into the golf world. From the top down, even the shoes will likely grab market share from the major competing brands. To conclude, Sun Day Red has a great look for the golf course, but the history and competitive excellence that goes along with it will be the overarching factor that leads to dominant success.
