Scotty Cameron Fine Milled Putters
Scotty Cameron putters have been trademarked as some of the highest quality pieces of golf equipment available. From the sleek design to the intricate details of the craftsmanship, Scotty Cameron fine milled putters are as the reputation advertises. In this blog, we will take a look at the different types of models offered, the history behind the putters, and our opinion of where the equipment and brand lands for different players.
Designs
There are approximately 31 different models, excluding limited edition putters, stemming from four main categories. These four categories are Super Select, 2024 Phantom, Phantom X, and Long Design. Amongst these categories are about as many options as one could possibly specify for different types of putter heads. Without going into too much detail right now, the Super Select category is going to focus on what are called “blade” putters. The 2024 Phantom category is centered around “mallet” putters and focuses on different weight and alignment designs. The Phantom X is very similar to the 2024 Phantom but has a slight modification that makes them the new attraction amongst Scotty Cameron putters. Lastly, the Long Design is for the “over-sized” look enhanced focus on stability.
Obviously, with 31 different models there is far too much information to go over each different design in the catalog. However, we will certainly break down the specifications and reasoning behind each category and what the putters are designed to do.
Super Select
The Scotty Cameron Super Select line is without a doubt their most recognizable putter line, partially due to the fact that Tiger Woods has gamed a “Newport” putter for the vast majority of his career. The Super Select models of putters are all about the dual-milled technology and consistency. Other additions include vibration dampening rings, heel and toe weights, and sole plates made out of aircraft aluminum. With the specifications listed above, one can easily see the high level of detail that goes into the pure design of the Super Select putters. Made in different “plus” sizes and alterations towards players liking, there is a lot to like in the classic blade style Scotty Camerons.
2024 Phantom
The still new Phantom lines of Scotty Camerons are pertaining to the new preference amongst players for the mallet style. The whole reasoning behind a mallet putter is increased forgiveness, and the 2024 Phantom models provide just that. Having the same dual-milled technology and vibration resistance, the 2024 Phantom also includes increased specification amongst the alignment lines or dots that a player prefers. These simple tweaks may not look like a lot on paper; however, they can make all of the difference when it comes to the feel of a putter. Again, there are many more intricate details that go into each putter, and we will make sure to leave the link to the Scotty Cameron website at the bottom of the blog incase readers want to learn more.
Phantom X
Inspired by Justin Thomas’s prototype, the Phantom X is the new standard for Scotty Cameron Phantom putters. With very similar characteristics to the 2024 Phantoms, the Phantom X has made the additional modifications to have a self-centering sole plate design that acts as the ultimate tool at set up. When addressing the golf ball before a putt, this sole plate gives the player a complete look of balance and feel to deliver more consistent putts upon impact. This new technology is tour validated and the next generation of the mallet putter design.
Long Design
The two models offered under the Long Design category are pretty simple in the strategy that they are trying to achieve. The goal of the larger and heavier putter head is to stabilize the hands and shoulders during the putting stroke. In offering both a Phantom and Super Select style, players who prefer these levels of stabilization, are still about to game a putter to their preferences. In addition to the larger head, the Long Design putters also include a stronger, heavier shaft that enhances the feel of the putter during the stroke.
As you can see from reading the information above, there is a lot to unpack here between the history of championships won between Tiger and other tour members, and just the sheer amount of different models’ part of the catalog. But the real question is, are Scotty Cameron putters worth it and should the everyday player have one in the bag.
Our Opinion
Look, Scotty Cameron putters are fantastic, there is no doubt about that. But at the end of the day, these putter retail for around $499, if not more. There is certainly a stigma around the Scotty Cameron being every golfer’s “Grail” of golf equipment and from the consistency and intricacy involved, it’s easy to see why. Not to mention, Tiger Woods added to the popularity with the massive wins in Majors and created this brand image that Scotty Cameron putters are the cream of the crop.
Here is the realist answer, if you are a mid to high handicapper, a Scotty Cameron unfortunately will not make you a better putter and therefore you probably should not spend the price tag on one. Putting is so much about feel and practice, a $499 putter is not the total solution. However, they are phenomenal pieces of equipment and if you are a player who is serious about becoming a better putter and put in the work to utilize the features that a Scotty Cameron putter has, then it may be worth it.
