Gaylord Springs Golf Links
This week’s course of the week is Gaylord Springs Golf Links, located right in the heart of Nashville, TN. Just a short drive from BNA airport and right next to the Gaylord Opryland, this golf course is in a pristine area. Aside from the great location, Gaylord Springs offers some of the best golf that Tennessee has to offer. In this blog we take a look at the course layout, amenities, and our overall opinion. Follow along to learn more.
Course Layout
When looking at Gaylord Springs Golf Links, the first thing that players will notice is the links style lay out of the course. Elevation is not a worry when navigating the 18 holes, however, there are still plenty of challenges that the course presents. Starting with the tee shot, this course is going to favor the long ball. The ability for a player to consistently get the ball down the fairway will deem valuable to score well. Preciseness is not as important, however the bends amongst the links-style layout can bring challenges if tee-balls are too wayward.
Moving into approach shots, for any players who have played links style golf courses before, the approach shot is arguably the most important part of the round. The golf ball is not going to roll down the fairway most often and will end up in unfavorable lies. Players need to leave their 3 or 4 shot in the right places on or around the greens in order to score well at Gaylord Springs. Holes to note as above average on the difficulty setting are 2, 6, 7,11, and 15. These holes have threatening bunkers, water hazards, and grass mounds.
Lastly, the most challenging part of any links style course is the green complexes, which in this case are MiniVerde Bermuda grass greens. As referenced before, it is pivotal to leave your approach shot in a good spot below the hole on the green, as the undulation and speed of these greens can run up the scorecard. One skill that will result in lower scores will be the ability to control spin and predict roll-out. As designer Larry Nelson indicated, he wanted Gaylord Springs Golf Links to test and enthuse players from the moment they tee the ball up until the ball is pulled from the cup.
From the rundown provided, it is no surprise that Gaylord Springs Golf Links was names the number 2 course in Tennessee by Golf Digest, as well as one of the “Best Golf Resorts” and “Best Places to Play”. It’s pretty easy to tell that this course is a must play in the Nashville, TN area.
Amenities
You may have thought that Gaylord Springs ends with the golf course, and that is not the case. Voted as a top 100 golf shop in the U.S. and a top place to get married by “The Tennessean”, there are many other aspects that add to the experience. The driving range and practice facilities are some of the bests we have ever seen and stay in pristine condition even through the winter months.
Lastly, the Gaylord Springs Golf Links club house is one of the most remarkable clubhouses on the planet. Known for hosting extravagant weddings, events, and more, its historic look will take your breath away. It really ties the whole golf experience together.
Our Opinion
Gaylord Springs is an absolute must play when in the Nashville, TN area. The golf course is unique and most importantly a lot of fun to play. However, the experience one receives when playing at Gaylord Springs is one that is unforgettable. At just 15 minutes from downtown, there is also plenty to do post round, which is added benefit.
