Home of The Blackface Sheep; Hermitage Golf Course
Home of the Blackface Sheep, Hermitage Golf Course is a not so hidden gem anymore, but certainly one of the best public golf courses in the USA. From reading the heading, one might ask “Blackface Sheep”? You heard that right, Hermitage Golf Course is home to many Blackface Sheep that often roam around the outskirts of the golf course. Thats not the only unique part of Hermitage Golf Course, as the course features two amazing eighteen-hole courses. In this blog, we will break down each course, the practice facilities, and clubhouse. We think you are going to like this one.
Presidents Reserve
The first, and more popular of the two courses, is Presidents Reserve. This eighteen-hole layout is absolutely pristine and often times very difficult. Winding its way through the Hermitage trees and alongside the Cumberland River, Presidents Reserve offers players challenging tee shots, requiring players to pick and choose clubs wisely. Once players find the fairway (or rough), they will find precise bunker placement that again will leave you wondering where you want to take on. Lastly, and most importantly, when it comes to Hermitage Golf Course players know that the greens will be in great condition and roll true year-round. From hole one through eighteen the undulated greens on Presidents Reserve require good speed first and foremost. For many first-time players, they will find themselves hitting putts off greens on numerous hold locations, which just adds to the challenging aspects of the course. Encapsulated by the beautiful scenery, changes in elevation, and wildlife, there is no question as to why Hermitage Golf Course’s Presidents Reserve was voted the number one public golf course in Tennessee.
Generals Retreat
The second, and higher rated by golf digest of the two courses, is Generals Retreat. Offering the same exact exquisite aspects of Presidents Reserve, the only true difference that we have noticed about Generals Retreat is that it is a little more hole-to-hole and forgiving off the tee. Simply due to the layout, golfers have more room on other holes for mishits, however, for what the course gives up in terms of tee-shots, it makes up for in difficulty on the greens. The Generals Retreat green layouts may be some of the most fun we have ever played, while also being some of the most challenging. Just like Presidents Reserve, the surfaces are in great condition year-round and roll fast and true. What makes the Generals Retreat greens so difficult and entertaining is the pin positioning around the undulation. Which similar Tennessee wildlife and wilderness around, Generals Retreat is another course players just have to get out to.
Practice Amenities and Clubhouse
Hermitage Golf Course offers incredible practice facilities, including a massive putting green, full driving range with unlimited range balls, as well as a chipping area with a bunker greenside. Everything that a player could need pre-round, Hermitage has it covered and keeps their practice facilities in fantastic shape. Additionally, Hermitage Golf Course has a beautiful clubhouse that includes a bar and grill with many TVs and fabulous food, a pro-shop with big name gear, and events center where celebrations and weddings are held. Lastly, the course even features private cottages for out-of-town players to stay and enjoy.
Our Opinion
In our opinion, Hermitage Golf Course may be a top-five public golf course option in the United States. From tee to green, from clubhouse to sheep, it is the complete package for the weekend golfer or annual golf trip. The 36 holes on the property stay in unbelievable shape and challenge players in ways that they may not be used to. Most importantly, THE SHEEP.
