Augusta National
With March right around the corner, that means we are one month closer to the best weekend of the year. Home of The Masters, this week’s course of the week is Augusta National, arguably the most prestigious golf course on the planet. In this blog we will take a look at the history behind the course, The Masters Tournament, and other interesting aspects of the storied Augusta National.
History
Founded in the early 1930s, Augusta National is known for its secluded, pine needle covered, lush atmosphere that creates an unbelievable overall ambiance. Along with the almost heavenly attributes, Augusta National has from the get-go imposed the rules of no cell phones, or electronic devices, running, or loud noises. Although these implications may seem unnecessary, they are part of the history that makes the course just so special. Other important facts to note are around the Butler Cabin near hole 18, where Master’s Tournament winners are presented with their green jackets, which has been a Master’s tradition for the longest time and is arguably the most sought-after prize in all of golf. Of course, with a club as pristine and strict as the home of The Masters, only 300 members are invited to join the club and are on an invite-only basis.
The Course
Interesting enough, Augusta National once sat on a plant nursery which is why the holes of the course are named after the tree that it has been associated with. Playing at a par-72 and at over 7,500 yards from the tournament tees, the course is not for the faint of heart. Known for the lightning-fast, diabolical greens, it can be seen from watching the tournament on TV that even the world’s best players have to be on their A-game to perform well and hope to be in contention for a green jacket. One of the most well-known terms in all of golf is “Amen-Corner”, which refers to holes 11, 12, and 13 where Augusta National keyed the title as its own spinoff of the “Hot Corner” in baseball. When players approach Amen-Corner, it is inevitable that the most exciting shots of the tournament are approaching, and precision is at a premium. The curvature and creativity that the holes are cut from are truly some of the bests in all of professional golf. There have been many tournaments won and lost on the famous 13th hole and more specifically on the green itself.
Champions
As stated before, The Master’s champion is arguably the most prestigious championship in all of golf and one of the most well-known trophies in all of sports. Past champions include the likes of Jack Nicklaus (6 times), Tiger Woods (5 times), Arnold Palmer (4 times), Gary Player, Nick Faldo, and more. From just the list of champions provided, one is able to see just how much weight this course and tournament hold amongst professional golf, and the moments in history that have been created. History in the likes of Bubba Watsons winning shot from the pine straw or Tiger’s return to greatness in 2019, are moments that seem surreal and often impossible, but at Augusta National there is no such thing. Owning a green jacket cements a player’s legacy as one of the greatest ever and holds home to the Augusta National champions family forever. One of the coolest traditions in all of sports revolves around the Master’s dinner, where the previous year’s winner creates their own menu and serves all other past winners. From that tradition alone, it is easy to see the impact that winning just one Masters has on a player’s trajectory.
