The Quarry Golf Course; San Antonio’s Hidden Gem

The Quarry Golf Course: San Antonio’s Hidden Gem, located in the heart of the Lone Star State is this week’s course of the week and may be one that most have not heard of. Golf in San Antonio in extremely underrated, with tons of options ranging from affordable Alamo City Trail courses, all the way up to TPC San Antonio, home of The Valero Texas Open. However, one of the most unique, challenging, and overall enjoyable courses in the central Texas area is The Quarry Golf Course.

Quarry?

Just from reading the name of the course, one may infer that The Quarry Golf Course may be around or involved with some sort of rock quarry. Although this is not false, it does not do the course justice with just how intertwined the golf course is with what once was the Alamo Quarry. With over 100 years of history, the back-nine of The Quarry Golf Course is immersed in the actual rock quarry and presents all sorts of unique challenges for players.

The Course

Getting into the actual golf course, The Quarry offers players totally different experiences amongst the front and back-nine holes. The front-nine of the course presents challenging tee-shots with water on just about every hole, which forces players to work their way around the fairways. The greens are very ungulated, but typically play pretty moderate to slow in terms of speed. One of the amazing aspects of the course that it often times hard to believe, is how well kept and lush the course stays year-round. With summers days regularly in the one-hundreds and little rain, the course maintenance is truly top notch.

Moving into the back-nine of The Quarry, this is where golfers are truly wowed at the complexity and creativity of the golf course. Not even pictures do the beauty of the 9-holes laid out in the middle of what once was the Alamo Rock Quarry. Again, the layout of the golf course requires crafty tee-shots on just about every hole, whether over water or over a vast canyon, there is just truly nothing like it. Arguably the best part about the entire golf course is the fact that every single hole can be seen on the back-nine. From ten to eighteen, golfers can take in every aspect of the Keith Foster creation.

Off the course, players are greeted by phenomenal practice areas including a full driving range, putting-green, and chipping area with a bunker included. Although many public golf courses have similar attributes, it is hard to find others in as good of shape year-round.

The only downside to The Quarry Golf Course is the greens, unfortunately. For players looking for fast, true greens, The Quarry for reasons unknown, has greens that seem to grow long the entire year. Likely due to the extreme heat conditions, it is hard to blame the staff, but often times they are just not up to the same standard of the rest of the golf course.

Our Opinion

From the information provided above, it is not hard to tell that we are huge fans of The Quarry Golf Course. Ranked the #7 most unique golf course by World Travel Magazine, the wildlife, views, and overall design make it a must play for golfers in central Texas and all over the state. In addition to the amazing layout, the course is affordable and offers phenomenal twilight opportunities. The Quarry Golf Course is as good as it gets for public golf and ranks up near the top of our favorite courses in the United States.
