Social Media Golf: The New Wave
Social media golf has become the new wave of content in the golf world. Sparked by the COVID-19 pandemic, more and more social media content creators have curated to the golf space and have been vastly successful. In this blog we will dive into the major players in the space, each one of the creator’s niches, and why it is good for the sport. Join us as we learn about this match made in heaven.
The Players
Almost midway through 2024, many golf content creators have immerged over the last year. These creators have noticed the opportunities through others and have surged onto the scene. However, in our minds, there are four major influencers and brands that lead the way. These four major “players” are Foreplay by Barstool Sports, Good Good, Bob Does Sports, and Rick Sheils. These groups and individuals have built a monster market in the golf space behind videos, social media, podcasts, and more.
It is now becoming more frequent for these types of creators playing matches on their YouTube channels with some of the biggest names in the game. So much so, that Foreplay by Barstool Sports was recently seen doing a video with Tiger Woods himself. All of this five years ago may have seemed very unlikely, but with COVID-19 presenting unforeseen opportunities, these content creators have changed the game forever.
Foreplay by Barstool Sports
One of the first companies in the golf content space was Foreplay by Barstool Sports. The group of four operates heavily followed social media pages, as well as a podcast that releases episodes twice a week. Foreplay in our eyes, is most notably recognized for beginning the surge of playing with professionals and posting the matches on their YouTube page. Beginning back in 2020, Foreplay played their first “four-man scramble” against Kevin Kisner and is the first match between content creators and PGA Tour players that we know of. Foreplay is now members of TaylorMade and have posted numerous videos with golfs biggest names.
Good Good
Good Good, the most followed golf content creators on the planet, began as a bunch of friends posting entertaining golf content to YouTube back during the pandemic. With over 1.12 million subscribers, the channel has skyrocketed into not just the most followed golf content of all time, but one of the most followed content creations ever. Similar to Foreplay, Good Good has its own podcast, social media pages, and even golf clubs. They have jumped into the market of playing professionals as well and are members of Calaway Golf.
Bob Does Sports
Bob Does Sports is the most recent heavy weight in the golf content space. Known for their comedy on the golf course, Bob Does Sports has grown rapidly over the last year. Members of Callaway golf as well, the members of Bob Does Sports have become some of the most popular and liked parties amongst brands like Good Good and Foreplay.
Rick Sheils
Easily the most tenured member of the content heavy weights, Rick Sheils started out and has maintained the image of content revolving around helping players play better golf. However, since 2020 Sheils has joined the likes of Good Good on the golf course and has leaned a bit more into the content atmosphere. However, Sheils has still stuck to the niche of improvement and is one of the most viewed creators worldwide.
Our Opinion
In our opinion, social media golf is one of the best things that ever happened to the sport. The visibility and excitement that has been driven towards the game since these major brands found their way onto the scene is unbelievable. We greatly look forward to seeing what the future of golf looks like around social media.
